How is Higher Education in Crisis?
Consider these facts:
- During the last decade an estimated 1 million low-income, academically qualified U.S. students failed to attend college due in some part to financial need.
- Nationwide an estimated 400,000 students do not go on to college each year simply because they cannot afford the cost.
- Up to 25% of academically-qualified low-income students don't even apply to college.
- Over the next decade, 4.4 million qualified students across our country won't be able to afford a four-year college and 2 million won't be able to attend any college at all.
- Since 1990, the United States has dropped from having the highest level of college participation rates in the world to 13th among developed nations.
- Private scholarships and access to information are seen as key elements in helping meet the financial need for lower-and middle-income students.
